"Motherhood and Moving: A Reason for Denying the Privilege of the Heart"

The NCHC Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity, 2022

"Motherhood and Moving" is a nonfiction text crafted primarily on location-based writing. It is an essay that delves into the inexplicable gravity that certain places have which we can feel deep inside our bodies. In this essay, I use the example of my grandmother and her move from Wisconsin to Tennessee in the 1970s to explain how human connection can bind us to a place even when our hearts lead us somewhere else. I wrote this piece acknowleging the role of grief in impulse, and with the realization that the ability to follow one's heart is a privilege. Over the last year, I have worked on this project piecing together my many years of ancestry research and collecting family anecdotes in order to better tell this story. It is my hope that this narrative brings readers closer to understanding home.

"The 5 Percent"

Sequoyah Review: UTC's Undergraduate Literary & Arts Magazine, 2019

This anti-love poem reflects the unique experience of height (six-foot-plus) as a woman, in a world of divorce with little to no healthy modeled relationships, love to me was always hopeless.

Poetry, to me, is always something that has come straight from the heart. Having not been formally trained in the craft, this first publication of mine overjoys me even today.
